Cooking Games and Heat

Heat is a major consideration when you are planning on playing cooking games in your kitchen. The heat sources in a kitchen can be extremely dangerous, especially if you are not certain of the best ways to handle heat and the sources that create it. Learning to cook safely with heat is a critical part of playing cooking games safely.

Never Cook With Heat Alone

While it is never a good idea to play cooking games while you are alone in your home, it is a terrible idea to work with heat if you are not around someone else while you are doing it. More injuries come from burns than just about anything else in the kitchen. Most fires also are started in the kitchen when the stove or another heat source is used. For these reasons, be sure that there is a responsible adult or teen with you while you play. You will also want to be sure that you have permission to use heat sources while you play cooking games.

Handle Hot Pans and Pots Correctly

Potholders are your new best friend when it comes to pots and pans. Grab a glove potholder to keep your hands protected on all sides when you reach into grab a hot pot or a tricky cookie sheet. Even with a potholder, however, the heat can come through in a very short amount of time. Before you pick up something hot, know where you are going with it and get there directly. If your potholder is wet, you can count on it being little or not protection against heat as the water will allow the heat to reach your hands almost instantly. When you put the pot or pan down, you will want to be sure that the area you select is clear of debris, especially plastic that can melt.

Clear the Area for Cooking Games

When you are opening the oven or moving pots on the stove, you should be sure the area is clear. Never lift a pot of boiling noodles over your little brother’s head as there is always the chance an accident will happen. Move everyone well out of the general vicinity before doing any moving or opening. Remember that steam can be a danger as well, so do not let anyone – including yourself – lean in when you are taking the lid off that hot casserole dish.

Watch Flammables in Cooking Games

Anytime you plan on using the stove or oven, you should be sure that there are not flammable items in the vicinity. A scrap of paper, the dishtowel you threw down, the piece of food that is lodged to the burner can all smolder and start a fire in far less time than you would think. Clear the work area completely before starting any cooking projects to be sure that you have room to work without worrying about knocking things onto hot burners. Also get in the habit of keeping the range or cook top bare at all times, even when it is not in use.

Lodge Logic Pre Seasoned 9 Quart Dutch Oven with Iron Cover

The original slow cooker, this Pre-seasoned 9 qt dutch oven with iron cover cooks meats to perfection. Generous size to cook up even a large roast or chicken. Lodge Logic Seasoned finish is ready to use. 13 1/4″ diameter, 4 3/4″ deep

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Perfect….
I love this! I bought it to make chicken stock. I had the 6qt. enameled dutch oven but, I could only make stock with one chicken at a time. Sometimes, I’d end up making stock for two days just to get the chicken & stock that I wanted. Now, two days work is reduced to one. It is just perfect. Last night, I roasted two chickens in it and they turned out great. Even the kids thought that the chicken tasted better than when I was making the roasters in either Pyrex or my big roasting pan. It is heavy but, it is well worth it for the amount of time it saves and the great taste of our food. I’d buy it again in a heartbeat.

5 Stars Extremely pleased
I’ve been waiting for quite some time for the free shipping to be available on this product Lodge 9 qt Dutch Oven. It is everything I expected it to be. We have cooked with cast iron for 40 plus years, it’s a way of life for us. Both of us grew up on farms and it’s a given that cast iron is the way to go. Just use common sense and the cookware will take care of itself.

Amazon did everything they said they would do, delivery was on time and the price was absolutely unbeatable. Thank you again, George

5 Stars Lodge Dutch oven
Lodge ALWAYS makes an EXCELLENT product–My mom always bought lodge cast-iron skillets–Not many because they didn’t wear out

5 Stars A large, durable pot.
I was pleased with the size of this Dutch oven. It is a very versatile tool indeed – perfect for frying, roasting, and stovetop cooking in large quantities. I cannot imagine my chili in any other receptacle. At 22 lbs with free shipping, the Amazon buy is a steal. As soon as I unwrapped it I cooked up a mess of collard greens. For as big as it is, the weight is manageable. My only qualm is that I wish it were slightly narrower and deeper rather than wider and shallower. The width makes for a lot of necessary oil when deep frying. On the plus side, the wide surface area makes for easy and even simmering and stirring.

It came pre-seasoned, but I keep it well-oiled with a thin coat of vegetable oil or bacon grease after every use. Every once in a while it is good to rub it down with bacon fat and put it in the oven at 250 for two hours just to keep the seasoning layer strong.

5 Stars a keeper
I love this dutch oven. It’s great for my larger recipes like a double recipe of Ropa Vieja or a large roast. It cooks the meat to perfection. It makes for a cool presentation at the table as well. The handle made it quite easy to carry (full of lots of delicious food)to the dining room table. I also have the Lodge color enameled cast iron 6 quart dutch oven. I’m sure I’ll be enjoying them both for many years to come!
