Tips From the Experts in Cooking Rice, Potatoes and Pasta

The word “chef” is used to refer to any person who cooks professionally. In a professional kitchen setting, however, the word is used only for the one person in charge of everyone else in the kitchen, the executive chef. A chef is a widely respected because of his expertise and intricate abilities in the art of cooking. Here, I present you expert tips from professional chefs to be taken into consideration when cooking pasta, rice, or potatoes.

When pasta is fresh it tends to require less water than dried pasta. You need to have a large saucepan of rapidly boiling water ready—just about enough boiling water for the pasta to cook in. To prevent the pasta from sticking together, a little oil should be added to the water. After that, add pasta to the pan, making sure that the water remains boiling, while at the same time stirring for ten seconds to separate the pasta. Depending on the type of pasta you’re using, boil for two to four minutes.

It is said that the easiest way to determine whether pasta is “al dente” is removing a piece from the saucepan and testing it between your teeth. The ideal “al dente” pasta will have some texture when bitten, but it should not be dry and hard in the middle.

Pasta is also cooked dried. Do not fall prey to the common mistake of not having enough boiling water when cooking dried pasta. Prepare a large saucepan of rapidly boiling water. Add a little oil and pasta to the pan. To separate the pasta, stir for twenty seconds. Boiling should be for ten to fourteen minutes–depending on the shape of the pasta and the flour used. To serve hot, drain and eat immediately without any extra oil or butter. To serve cold, rinse pasta under warm water, and then rinse under cold water.

If you want perfect pasta, do not boil the noodles! Instead, boil the water and add pasta after turning off the fire. Cover the pasta, removing cover only to stir the pasta every five minutes for twenty minutes. This way, you will never have overcooked pasta, but perfect pasta every time.

Let’s now move on to rice. Here are some tips for making fluffier rice. Before adding rice, add one teaspoon of lemon juice to the water. This will not change the flavor but will plump up the grains to give you perfect rice.

Here are some tips for adding flavor to rice. Substitute plain water for chicken stock, beef stock, or tomato juice when boiling flavored rice. It may be served “as is” or more flavor may be added by sautéing some vegetables in olive oil and garlic and then adding them. This will give you a delicious and healthy side dish.

Here are some tips for reducing the stickiness of pasta and rice. Because of the starch in pasta and rice, they tend to stick together. This may be avoided by adding a splash of vinegar when boiling them. This gives you perfect, stick-free pasta and rice every time.

Here are some tips for making the fluffiest possible baked potatoes. You need to choose a potato with high starch content. Examples of good choices are Russets and Idahos. To aid steam in escaping during baking, pierce the potatoes several times with a knife before placing them in the oven. Wrapping your potatoes will cause them to steam rather than bake, so do not do this. When serving your baked potatoes, before adding toppings, cut a slit in the top and squeeze the sides of the potato.

Here are some great tips for making the skin edible when you’re baking potatoes. Before placing them into a hot oven, rub the outside of your potatoes with some vegetable oil. This will cause it to become not only soft,but delicious as well. A little added butter and sour cream, or even shredded cheese gives you a perfect side dish!

Smothered in butter or drowned in gravy…however you like them…mashed potatoes are a wonderful accompaniment to a variety of meals. To copy a page off the professional’s book, start making your mashed potatoes by putting several whole garlic cloves in the water with the boiling potatoes. All this garlic cooked up will add a superb flavor during mashing. Add buttermilk, cream cheese, sour cream butter, or a combination of these while mashing potatoes. If you need baked potatoes in a flash, here are some excellent tips from the experts. Potatoes may be microwaved, but are always nicer in the oven. Slicing your potatoes in half (lengthwise) and baking them with the flat part facing down, will facilitate speed in baking. Remember to grease the baking sheet, then simply place potatoes into a 375-degrees oven for approximately thirty minutes.

Hey, no one said that your sophisticated meal had to “look” sophisticated. It only needs to taste that way to please your palette and make you feel like you spent hours and hours cooking.

Electing to purchase a crock pot and follow some of the trendier crock pot recipes on the internet can also solved your problem quickly. You can make virtually anything in a crock pot, from simple spaghetti to chicken recipes that will make your mouth water and beef crock pot recipes that will rival any major restaurant-and the beauty is, your food will come out perfect every time without you having to lift a finger once you set the food in the slow cooker.

Yet another method is to select a salad. You may be thinking this is a crazy way to create a sophisticated meal, but salad bars popping up all over the country prove otherwise as they rake in the dollars and are offered five star ratings. Choose toppings that will keep well in the refrigerator, prepare them over a weekend-slice hard boiled eggs and put them in a container, drain kidney beans, etc.-and the use whenever you’re hungry for something that tastes better than restaurant quality.

Cooking a sophisticated meal has always been rumored to be a difficult task. But if you’re willing to skip the traditional methods and try out a more unconventional way of making your sophisticated meal on the fly, you’ll be able to please yourself each and every time you walk into the kitchen.

Pasta to the Rescue

If there is one dish that has earned for itself a reputation as a universal favorite, it would definitely be pasta. Pasts can be cooked up a myriad different ways and is the best food around that can cater to a wide range of tastes. It can be served as a salad, a main dish and even as dessert! The possibilities are endless, as are the ingredients that you can use to accompany the pasta.

Because of this, pasta can be the ultimate dish-to-the-rescue for quick-fix meals. It is a quick lifesaver when you have surprise guests or when your teenager decides to hold an impromptu dinner or slumber party with his friends. Pasta is the easiest dish to prepare in times when you feel you are too worn out to do any kind of serious, complicated cooking.

Preparing a pasta dish is certainly a better alternative to ordering takeout or eating out, since the best way towards healthy eating and living is to always try to prepare your meals yourself.

Variety is the Spice of Life

Always have pasta in your pantry. When you have the time to do the shopping and the cooking, it is best to stock up. Pasta comes in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors and because it can be stored for long periods of time, it is best to buy and stock several different varieties. You can choose from fettuccine, tagliatelle, bucatini, farfalle, fusilli, route or sphagetti. Just drop these in a pot of boiling water and you have pasta ready in minutes. With different shapes and textures, you can always make each dish look unique and appetizing. It would always seem that you did a lot of work when in reality; you only prepared the dish in minutes.

For emergencies, you can store different sauces in the freezer. On a day when you find yourself with no other pressing chores, spend some time in the kitchen preparing batches of different types of pasta sauces. Whether you choose a marinara sauce or any other variety, you can store these in clearly labeled containers in your freezer. When you are ready to use it, it can be easily thawed in the microwave or on the stove until it begins to boil, which will only take minutes. You can do this while you are boiling the pasta and when you are ready to eat, your pasta and its accompanying will be ready to be tucked into.

Bringing out the Crock Pot

If you rarely have the time to work in the kitchen, using a Crock Pot will be a good way to stock up on sauces for your pasta dishes. Since the Crock Pot is closed and cooks using low temperatures, it is safe to just leave it unattended as it cooks, allowing you to go about your work day worry-free while still getting the cooking done.

Even lasagna is a breeze with the crock pot. Sautee the meat, onion and garlic and cook the cheese sauce. Layer the meat, cheese, sauce and pasta in the crock pot and leave to cook for 4-6 hours. Then go about doing whatever you want. At the end of 6 hours, you have lasagna for an immediate meal plus plenty more that you can store for emergencies.

What is great about pasta sauces is that they only get better in time. You will always be the gourmet cook with the flavorful meals – all prepared with ease. Just don’t let anyone in on your little secret.
